Enchanted Rock

Whether your interest is geological, spiritual, historical, physical, or simply to enjoy the countryside you will find Enchanted Rock State Natural Area a delightful place to visit. The visitor center at the park entrance houses an exhibit explaining how the dome was formed and giving ecological details. For those who are here for technical rock climbing or to rapel there is a sign-in sheet so the park rangers know where you are and what you are doing.

For those with an urge to 'get to the top' there is a clearly marked hiking trail to the summit. For much of the climb the trail is on smooth granite which can be very slippery when wet so avoid the summit trail in rainy weather. The trail ascends (425 ft / 122 m) and is steep in places but there are plenty of opportunities to stop and rest.

In the boulder field on the west side of the summit is a cave formed by a fissure in the granite which is fun to scramble through.

For those who are here for technical climbing or rapelling the west face of the dome is more precipitous and offers a wide variety of challenges. Other good climbing sites within the park include Turkey Peak, Buzzards Roost and Freshman's Mountain.

For a longer and less challenging hike follow the loop trail which completes a circuit of the park and covers pretty well all the natural habitats which can be found here. Best time to enjoy the wildlife and birds is at dusk.

In the summer the sun can be blazingly hot. Even in the winter afternoon sun can be intense. Use plenty of sunscreen and take lots of water to drink.
