Big Bend and the Davis Mountains have much to offer the serious photographer. From the wide desert vistas to the towering mountain crags. A microcosm of plants, animals and insects. Clear air, starry starry nights, amazing sunrises and sunsets.
The Rio Grand weaves its way through the desert and the mountains carving canyons up to 1,500 feet deep, creating a fertile floodplain snaking its narrow path through the seemingly endless desert.
Man has been leaving his mark on this landscape for thousands of years. Rock paintings executed by long gone native peoples remind us how their lives were interwoven with their environment
Adobe ruins give testament to settlers from Mexico and the United States struggling to provide shelter for their families whilst they eked out an existence.
Later settlers brought masonry skills and mining techniques which left a more permanent mark and, for a while, introduced a degree of prosperity into the local economy.
They left behind their graveyards and the rusted skeletons of their equipment - ghost towns and wandering, lonely spirits.
The communities which survived through the 20th and into the 21st century are rugged and independant, welcoming and hospitable. A comfortable mixture of old and new which recognizes adaptation as a pre-requisite for survival.
